- "Shoeless Joe" Jackson is respon-
- sible for a phrase that has become
- part of the English language -- or so
- the story goes. Joe and his White Sox
- teammates (who came to be called
- the "Black" Sox because of the
- scandal) had to stand trial in court.
- According to some reports, as Joe left
- the courthouse one day, a young fan
- went up to him, with tears in his eyes.
- "Say it ainΓÇÖt so, Joe," the boy reportedly
- said, hoping his hero had done
- nothing wrong. Some people say that
- never happened, but "Say it ainΓÇÖt so,
- Joe" has been part of our language
- ever since.
